What can you do on your safari?

Fishing

A little known fact about East Africa is the abundance of opportunities for fishing throughout the region. I offer a wide range of fishing safaris and, as always, I customize the itinerary to your personal angling tastes. A big catch Since most fishing areas also abound with game, it is easy to satisfy the desires of non-fishermen in your party while providing a spectacular fishing experience. Kenya offers five main categories of angling: Trout, Bass, Nile Perch, Mara Catfish, and Big Game Fishing.

Nile Perch. Good places to catch Nile Perch are in Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world (and the source of River Nile) and on the Nile itself in Uganda.

Mara Catfish. Though the Maasai Mara is famous for its game-viewing, which is truly second to none, the Mara River and its tributaries abound in catfish, weighing on average ten pounds. You can catch these monsters on spin equipment or try your luck at native means and use a hand line. Though the prey may be prosaic the scenery is not – expect to be interrupted by hippos bumping their way down the slippery banks as well as crocodiles slithering by. The sound of lions is never far away.

Big Game Fishing. Consider combining any safari with silver sands, snorkeling and a record billfish. The East African coast abounds with game fishing opportunities. I can recommend fine charters with crack crews. Best season for game fishing is August to March. But don't forget to bring your favorite tackle!

If you are planning a fishing safari, consider one of my beach recommendations: Mnemba Island Lodge.

Trout. In lakes on the side of Mt. Kenya and in the highland streams and rivers of the Aberdares rainbow and brown trout initially stocked nearly a hundred years ago by British settlers abound. Then, as now, fly fishing is the traditional means for catching these prime fighters. Several days can be spent fishing amidst the most dramatic high forest scenery as colobus monkeys and sometimes wading elephants comment on your form.

Bass. Kenya 's lake country abounds with black bass fishing opportunities. Good sized bass are generally taken on light spin equipment and fly gear. Lake Naivasha holds some truly excellent fish and its bird life is also legendary.
