Many tented camps operate with principles similar to homesteads and lodges, and give you the opportunity to sleep under canvas. The camp may be permanent or seasonal, but will always be well equiped with many of the comforts and conveniences you might expect.
Here are some of my recommendations:
Few opportunities exist today to experience East Africa as it was in the romantic past. The private tented mobile safari is, in every way, a singular evocation of that past. Your tented camp is exclusive to you, your guests, and your staff. As you travel your route through this magnificent region, your camp travels with you, carried from site to site in a large truck fitted with fresh water tanks and extended fuel capacity. This arrangement permits you to access the most remote areas in relative comfort. On travel days between campsites, you stay overnight in lodges or permanent tented camps.
Your
personal tent is ample, with sewn-in flooring and insect-proof screening throughout. Tents are always pitched a discrete
distance apart, in sites specially selected for their proximity to the best game viewing areas and always with an eye toward
cooling shade and natural beauty. Each sleeping tent is fully furnished with real beds and comfortable mattresses made up
daily. Chairs and washstands are provided. A shaded pavilion extends from each tent complete with lounge chairs and a table
for casual relaxation. A private shower tent and toilet tent are usually ensuite.

The focal point of any camp is the dining tent with its comfortable banquet table and traditional directors chairs. Meals far surpass regular camping fare. Soufflés and prime roasts are regular selections and East Africa's abundant rivers provide a bounty of fresh fish. Fresh bread is baked daily, and there is usually an abundance of local vegetables, fruits, and dairy products at every meal.
A tented safari adds up to a level of comfort and service that cannot be experienced by visiting hotels and lodges on the typical tourist route. As you slip into your freshly laundered shirt and climb between clean sheets to the sound of lions bellowing in the night, you'll understand the difference a custom tented safari can make. A difference you may well remember for a lifetime.
